Providing Fair And Efficient Solutions For Divorce, Custody And Family Law

At Hummel, Lewis & Davidson, LLP, our clients benefit from our attorneys’ abilities to sort out complicated matters during the division of assets, resolve the sensitive issues of custody, calculate fair support orders and deal with any problems that may arise in your divorce. We also have the trial experience to stand up for you if matters are not resolved out of court.

If you are ending a marriage or revisiting custody issues or financial support, contact a Bloomsburg divorce lawyer at the law firm of Hummel, Lewis & Davidson, LLP. We represent men and women in Bloomsburg, Danville, Berwick, Kulpmont and all of Columbia, Montour and Northumberland counties, and we practice in family courts in the surrounding counties of northeast and central Pennsylvania. Our family law attorney, Rebeka Buczeskie, helps our clients navigate the divorce process in a way that suits their unique needs. Barry Lewis has 25 years of experience in family law matters.

Divorce Options For You

Pennsylvania law allows for the following:

  • No-fault divorce, if you and your spouse agree on all matters
  • Divorce on grounds of adultery or “indignities”
  • Divorce on grounds of irreconcilable differences, if you have been separated for one year or longer

Our firm has skilled trial lawyers who will fiercely protect your interests in contested matters related to property division, custody, child support, or alimony and strive for out-of-court settlements to avoid the strife, expense, and negative effects that litigation can have on children.

They will inventory your assets and determine which are joint versus separately held properties and will often hire outside experts for valuations of businesses, professional practices, marital homes, investments, vacation properties, pensions, and retirement accounts.

We then create give-and-take solutions and prepare an offer or counteroffer for your spouse’s lawyer. If you cannot reach an agreement, we will request the court to appoint a special master to work out the remaining contested issues.

Custody And Parenting Plans

The best interests of the child is the court’s overriding standard for determining primary physical custody and visitation. To avoid decisions made by a judge who is not familiar with the specifics of your family, we keep the focus on a sensible out-of-court arrangement that considers work schedules and keeps both parents active in the child’s life and decisions about his or her upbringing. If a compromise cannot be reached, we will provide the expertise to build a successful case and we will represent the parent or grandparent in court proceedings. At Hummel, Lewis & Davidson, LLP, we have been working with the local courts for over 25 years. We understand how the special masters and judges view custody and what factors are important to them.

Alimony And Spousal Support

Alimony is often the most contested issue in a divorce and is thus a useful bargaining chip. We protect your interests as the payer or recipient of financial support such as:

  • Alimony pendente lite: Temporary spousal support while the divorce is pending, leveling the playing field so that one spouse can’t force the other spouse into an unfair settlement.
  • Alimony: Ongoing support to equalize the parties’ standards of living after divorce. It may be short-term or permanent, depending on the age, health, earning capacity of the spouse, and length of the marriage.

Adoption

With the opioid crises devastating families, adoptions of minor children are increasing. At Hummel, Lewis & Davidson, LLP, we represent family members as well as third parties who wish to adopt these neglected children. Whether the parents have given their consent, or an involuntary hearing must be held, we provide representation to both biological and adoptive parents to ensure that everyone’s rights are protected and the best interest of the child is the result of the process.

We handle all family law matters, including:

  • Modifications of custody or child support, including parent relocation
  • Adoption (stepparent, private or Children and Youth Services [CYS] adoptions)
  • Protection from abuse orders (representing either party)
  • Paternity (seeking child support or establishing visitation rights)
  • Name changes
  • Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements
